LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western Spartans dropped an 87-72 decision to the visiting University of Windsor Lancers Wednesday night at the David E Enarson Gym on the campus of TWU in Langley, BC. The loss drops the Spartans to 0-2 in preseason play, while the win moves the Lancers to 2-0.
A tough third quarter, where TWU was outscored 30-18, proved to be the difference as the former five time national champion Lancers defeated the Spartans.
"We got an opportunity to play a really good team tonight. And anytime you play a really good team in the preseason it can show you how far off you are and how close you are, and I think that there were moments of both in today's game," commented TWU head coach Cheryl Jean-Paul. "Our depth is a little bit more than it has been in the past. We still have a lot of things to work on and work through, but it is exciting because anytime I have given this group a challenge in an area of weakness that our opponent is taking advantage of they have demonstrated the ability to work through it. To have that mindset this early in the year bodes well for us once regular season gets underway."
"We didn't back down, we found our way and we are so much further ahead than what we have been in the past at this time of year."
Kayla Gordon with 17 points and four rebounds, Tessa Ratzlaff with 11 points and four rebounds, and Sarah Buckingham with 10 points and three assists were the statistical leaders for the Spartans. While Carly Steer with 17 points, Emily Prevost with 16 points and five rebounds, Melissa Ellis with 15 points and seven rebounds, Cheyanne Roger with 10 points and seven rebounds, and Caitlyn Longmuir with 10 points, three assists and three rebounds led the Lancers.
The Spartans matched the Lancers for much of the first half as Windsor went into the break leading 39-33.
Heading into the final quarter TWU trailed 69-51, but in the fourth quarter TWU was able to outscore Windsor 21-18 to make the final 87-72 for the Lancers.
Next up for the Spartans are a pair of road games on October 21 at North Idaho College and October 22 at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash.
